Epsom Rotaractors and Epsom Rotary associates attended Epsom Rotary's charity banquet which was in celebration of their 90th year!

Many of the Rotarians (and some Rotaractors) travelled to the venue via a coach service generously provided by Epsom Coaches.

At the drinks reception, images of some of Epsom Rotary's key moments throughout the years were projected onto the wall, for visitors to enjoy. An excellent booklet was also produced detailing the history of the club.

An excellent three course meal followed. With a raffle and the singing talents of the Heart and Soul Choir providing the entertainment and great night was had by all and raised approximately £1000 for Epsom Rotary's President Andy Ballard's chosen charities!EpsomRotaracthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01062385277687991146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1268579233888990267.post-62771390684386059502015-09-20T07:48:00.000-07:002015-12-24T10:21:21.444-08:00The Epsom and Ewell Borough Fun Day!

2014/15 has been a fantastic year for Epsom Rotaract - 3 new members, nearly £3,000 (so far) raised for our club charity and lots of brilliant socials and community events!

We've welcomed 3 new members to the club in 2014/15 – Tom, Jasmyn and Lidia. Things are looking really bright membership wise with 4 potential members attending events in the last few months and they will hopefully become club members in the near future.

This year the club has supported one local charity Surrey Air Ambulance (http://www.kssairambulance.org.uk/). The club chose to continue to support the charity in memory of Epsom Rotaractor Simon who sadly passed away in September 213. Our Carry on Flying Quiz in aid of Surrey Air Ambulance which took place in February was a huge success with 144 people attending and nearly £1,600 raised. And with our other fundraising efforts during the year we have raised nearly £3,000 for the charity, which we hope to present to them in the near future.
We have had several presentations to last year's charities in the last 12 months. In July we presented the Ebbisham Ward at Epsom General Hospital with a neonatal Sure Signs monitor purchased as a result of our fundraising for Epsom Medical Equipment Fund (EMEF). In November we presented Surrey Air Ambulance with £3,290.61 at a special club meeting. The club has been involved in a number of community events over the past year. In September members of the club helped out at the Epsom and Ewell Borough Family Fun Day at Hook Road Arena. In December we were doing Christmas Collections with Epsom Rotary and in March we returned to Slindon for our annual conservation weekend with the National Trust. Over the Easter weekend Epsom Rotaractor Helen volunteered at Rotary District 1140's RYLA weekend in the New Forest. We have also supported various Rotary and Rotaract events over the year. We had a really fun time volunteering at the Cancer Research UK Race for Life Event at Epsom Downs Racecourse.

We were course marshals and our main role was to cheer on and encourage the runners and direct them around the course. To assist our effort we had big foam hands for the all important high fives with the runners and musical instruments.

It was a fantastic atmosphere despite the rain showers halfway through. There were 3,000 runners and the organisers hope the event has raised £265,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Well done to Epsom Rotary Associate Caro who took apart in the 10km race and has so far raised £275 for Cancer Research UK. You can sponsor her at: https://www.justgiving.com/Caroknight/

We had a great evening at Leatherhead Rotary's Barn Dance at Fetcham Village Hall in aid of local charities.

Epsom Rotaractors Jasmyn, Katie and Helen and Jasmyn and Katie's partners Simon and Andrew had a really fun time dosey-doeing, threading the needle and stripping the willow to the music of the Byfleet Brewers.

We had a really good time learning the barn dancing moves and Katie and Andrew, crazily perhaps, did every dance.

Half way through the evening we enjoyed a lovely meal of either chicken curry, meat lasagne or vegetarian lasagne and towards the end of the evening there was a raffle. Katie and Andrew won a bottle of white wine and Jasmyn and Simon won some chocolates.

A huge thank you to Leatherhead Rotary for a very enjoyable evening and we hope you raised lots for local charities.EpsomRotaracthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01062385277687991146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1268579233888990267.post-80498055576749865812015-05-11T05:54:00.000-07:002015-05-28T05:56:26.613-07:00Rotaract District Conference for Districts 1120 and 1130 - 09/05/2015

A guest post from our Social Officer, Helen, on this year's District 1140 Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Weekend.

I helped with the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) over the Easter weekend. It took place in a lovely activity centre called Avon Tyrrell, in the beautiful countryside of the New Forest. It was great fun for all involved. Twenty students from local Sixth Forms participated. The staff consisted of 3 Rotarians from different clubs, myself and another Rotaractor from Portsmouth. The idea of the weekend was for the participants to develop and improve their communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. The accommodation was dormitories in the main house, and meals were provided in the dining hall, by the Centre.

The weekend included canoeing, low ropes, archery and a trust activity with the instructors from the Centre. The rest of the time was spent doing indoor activity sessions run by Rotary. These included a wide range of teamwork and communication based games, such as a fast paced coordination hat game. Another was a rumour game based on Chinese whispers, telling a short story. Others included silent teamwork games, which required different ways of communicating.

One of the most enjoyed activities run by Rotary was a creative egg race, in which the participants were split into four groups and each team had to design and make an object, out of any materials they could find, which they could use to propel an egg as far as possible, without breaking it. The winning team made wheels out of a stick and giant drafts pieces, sellotaped the stick to a chair trolley and put the egg on top, inside two cups sellotaped together, with tissue inside.

Another very much enjoyed activity was a treasure hunt in which participants were in teams, and had to find something ugly, a thing of beauty, something very light, a smooth round stone etc. from anywhere around the grounds. As judges, we had to disagree with what they found as much as we could, and they had to argue their reasons for why they thought it was a suitable object, which earned then more points, if it was a good argument. For example; one of them said the brick wall was ugly, but we argued it wasn't, as it consisted of different colours and had plants growing on it, so they had to find something else.

There were also sessions on 'Issues Affecting Young People' in which the participants listed all the issues they could think of, and put them together to make one long list. Some examples of issues which came up were unemployment, university fees, driving expenses, depression and abuse. The participants then got into groups to discuss who they could speak to about a particular issue, and what questions they could ask, which would help the problem. Each group shared their ideas with everybody else.

During evenings and daytime breaks, we all watched TV, and played table tennis, pool, Jenga and other games.

On the first day; myself and the Portsmouth Rotaractor said a few words about Rotaract to the participants, and the Rotarians told them about what Rotary do. We also had a visit from the District Governor and her husband, who is also in Rotary, and they gave a very inspiring talk to the participants about being a part of Rotary.

There was also a chance to go and see the local village Burley, one afternoon, which is a tourist area with interesting shops, including witch shops. There were lots of wild ponies around the village and in the fields by the road on the way to the village.

The aim of Katie's talk was to explain to Ewell Rotarians how Facebook can be used to promote Rotary and Rotaract and to inspire the club to give it a try.

After introducing herself Katie explained she thought it was essential for clubs to fully embrace social media and the opportunities it offers for promotion and engaging with new audiences if the Rotary movement is going to modernise and fully move into the 21st century.

Katie explained how she set up the Facebook page for the Epsom and Ewell Borough Family Fun Day in July and how she used the page to promote the event. She highlighted how effective a page can be for promotion and gave the example of one post on 20th September reaching 674 Facebook users.

Katie explained that her main involvement in social media is for Epsom Rotaract. She stated the primary aim of the Facebook page was promotion of the club, both its ethos and activities. She explained the first way she does this is regular posts. She does posts to promote club activities and charity events as well as to promote Rotaract and Rotary locally. Katie emphasised the importance of creating an image of an active club with varied and regular activities. She also explained how tagging can be used to increase a page's reach. Katie stressed how important it is to utilise local community pages such as 'What's On in Epsom' and 'The Best of Epsom and Ewell' to promote charity events and also advised contacting Rotary and Rotaract at national level via social media for extra coverage.

Katie showed the club the last week of posts on the Epsom Rotaract Facebook page to give them a flavour of what posts she does.
Katie explained the second way she does this is photos. They visually capture what a club is about and have a very large reach, especially if people in them are tagged. For example, Epsom Rotaract's Carry On Flying Quiz photo album reached 1,636 people, was liked 13 times and shared once and a video of the club's Great British Quiz last year reached 1,625 people, was liked 9 times and shared 16 times. Katie also explained how photo albums can be integrated with the club blog and gave a few examples.

Katie explained how important it is that a Facebook page is set up correctly. She highlighted a number of issues with the current Ewell Rotary Facebook page, in particular the lack of details in the 'About' section and the lack of recent activity and photos. Katie suggested in some ways the current page is worse than not having a page at all because it is creates the impression that Ewell Rotary is no longer an active club. Katie recommended creating some photo albums of the last year and doing some posts on big events in the Rotary year so far and after that doing regular updates.

Katie then explained the benefits of having a Facebook page. Firstly she told the club it is a brilliant promotion tool. It is free and easy to use she explained and moves Rotary into the 21st century. Secondly she explained it can be an excellent way to increase awareness of Rotary. Katie informed the club one of the most common things Epsom Rotaract hears from new members is 'if I had known about Rotaract earlier I would have joined sooner'. So increasing awareness of Rotary and Rotaract generally is vital and Facebook can be one of doing this, Katie explained.

Lack of self-promotion seems to be endemic in Rotary, she explained, as highlighted in Nisha Kotecha's recent blog post 'Why we need to share Rotary's good news' on the Rotary Voices blog. Katie explained that she had definitely found this to be the case locally when she searched online for news on local Rotary clubs' events and fundraising to post on the Epsom Rotaract Facebook page. Websites and other social media for Rotary clubs are often not up to date. Rotary and Rotaract need to be shouting out about all the fundraising and community events we do Katie explained, so the local community are aware of us and our existence does not come as a surprise to potential members who often stumble across us by chance if they don't come from a Rotary family. Katie informed the club that Mole Valley Rotary clubs have recently launched a 'Play Your Part Campaign' to raise awareness of what Rotary is doing in the local community and to encourage new members to join. She suggested perhaps this is something which should be replicated throughout Surrey.

Thirdly Katie explained having a Facebook presence can aid the recruitment of new members. She said having an active online presence has really helped Epsom Rotaract's recruitment. Being active on various social media accounts, she explained, means Epsom Rotaract are near the top of Google searches on Epsom social, Epsom social 18-30, Epsom community, Surrey Rotaract so when potential members are searching online for a social community group for under 30s Epsom Rotaract are right there. Katie also explained how Meetup has been very beneficial to Epsom Rotaract.

Katie then explained how Facebook allows page administrators to monitor the impact of their page through Insights which displays information on Page Likes, Post Reach, Engagement and Audience. As this feature is only available to pages with 30 likes or more she suggested Ewell Rotary's first target should be to get 9 more likes to unlock this feature. Katie explained how useful this feature is as it allows administrators to see which posts have the largest reach so this type or style of posting can be replicated in future.

Katie finished by saying that Facebook is an easy and quick way for Rotary clubs to start to engage with social media and if used effectively is a brilliant way to engage with a younger audience, promote themselves and raise general awareness of Rotary. She explained Facebook is not something to be scared of, but rather something that Rotary should really embrace along with other forms of social media if the movement is going to evolve and adapt to the 21st century and its ways of communication and promotion. Katie urged the club to follow some of the tips she had spoken about this evening and make the Ewell Rotary Facebook page something which represents the club, what they do, what Rotary means to them and something which the club can be proud of.

Katie thanked Ewell Rotary for inviting her to speak at their meeting. She said she hoped she had been able to give the club an insight into how she used Facebook for Epsom Rotaract and the Epsom and Ewell Borough Family Fun Day and that she had encouraged the club to embrace Facebook.
Katie, Chris, Anthony and Ellie headed to Bromley Parish Church for a fun evening of quizzing. Our team was paired up with Nisha and Stephen from Hampstead, Hendon and Golders Green Rotaract. Really good evening of quizzing, even if the quiz master was a little zealous with his fining policy, and great to meet Nisha and Stephen. And we came joint third! Thank you for a great evening Bromley Rotaract. A very well organised and fun charity event. And congratulations on raising £1,000 for Target TB.

Epsom Rotaract returned to Leatherhead Parish Church Hall for our Carry On Flying Quiz in aid of Surrey Air Ambulance (http://www.kssairambulance.org.uk/).

There were Surrey and flying themed rounds on Surrey, Sport, History, Music and Food and Drink plus a picture round on transport related films and a cryptic round on Surrey Towns and Villages. Epsom Rotaractor John Bishop was the quiz master for the evening and club mascot Super Ted was nearby looking out for any cheaters! There were 19 teams, 133 quizzers and 11 Epsom Rotaractors on the night.

In the end £1600 was raised for Surrey Air Ambulance! A brilliant figure!

Our Vice President Katie said "Surrey Air Ambulance is a charity, which is very close to the hearts of club members and our fundraising for them is in memory of a friend and club member who sadly passed away suddenly in 2013. It is fantastic that we have raised another £1,600 for this great local charity with our Carry On Flying Quiz. This builds on the success of our fundraising efforts for the charity last year, when our sponsored walk up Snowdon in June raised nearly £3,300."

To
raise money for EMEF last year Epsom Rotaract organised a very successful Great British Quiz.
With funds remaining after the purchase of a baby monitor for Epsom
General Hospital, the purchase of this special £1,428 Bariatric
Urology Couch has been made possible.

In January 2014 Urology
Diagnostic Services were centralised within the Trust and located in
a purpose built unit at Epsom Hospital, on the 1st floor of the Wells
Wing.

Daphne Colpman, Nurse Specialist said “The generous
gift of the Bariatric couch to the Urodynamic Service, has allowed us
to treat those individuals whose weight would have excluded them from
investigations in the past. It also has proved to be more comfortable
than a standard couch for all users, and enables us to provide a
better service to those who need assistance to move. Lastly, it is
electronically controlled by a foot peddle, which enables the nurse
or doctor undertaking the procedure to alter the patients position in
the middle of an investigation.”

John said "I'm
very proud to say that Epsom Rotaract has once again played its part
in helping the local community, via the money we have raised for the
EMEF. This couch will provide an improved service to local patients.
As someone who was born here it is great to know that the money we
have raised is assisting the public and the local hospital directly”.

As the drinks, conversation and er, Italian food, flowed, Felicia informed us that her birthday was actually the next day. Felicia said that she planned to go to the West End to get some theatre tickets from the refund queue. Let's hope her and the other punters weren't fighting like CATS and dogs for a ticket! EH? A great social event, that even a cheap pun couldn't spoil! Happy birthday Felicia!

Bar XLR also very kindly provided a free buffet for the evening. That, along with a bar, some free entertainment, courtesy of a cavalcade of excellent local singers, and a friendly atmosphere, made for a thoroughly enjoyable New Year's Event. It was so enjoyable that we forgot to take a photo of potential new member Sanchez who also attended. Sorry Sanchez!
