2013/14 Rotaract Year

2013/14 has been a great year for Epsom Rotaract - 4 new members, nearly £4,900 (so far) raised for our two charities and lots of brilliant socials and community events!

We've welcomed 4 new members to the club in 2013/14 - Dan, Lizzie, Jacky and Lucie. That's 8 new members in the last 2 years, which is fantastic! Things are looking really bright membership wise and hopefully we can build on that in 2014/15 when we roll out our new publicity strategy.

This year the club has supported two local charities, Epsom Medical Equipment Fund (http://www.emef.org.uk/index.php) and Surrey Air Ambulance (http://www.kssairambulance.org.uk/). EMEF was chosen by Club President John who was born prematurely at Epsom General Hospital and the club chose to support Surrey Air Ambulance in memory of Epsom Rotaractor Simon who sadly passed away in September. Our Great British Quiz in aid of EMEF which took place in March was a huge success with 137 people attending and £1,805.07 raised. Plus there were members of 6 different Rotaract clubs from 4 different districts at the event. And with our other fundraising efforts during the year we were able to donate £2,330.07 to EMEF at a presentation in June. The money will be used to buy specialist baby monitoring equipment and to contribute towards the funds for a urodynamic machine.

In June a team of 7 Epsom Rotaractors did the Snowdon Walk in memory of Simon. So far £1566.42 has been raised in sponsorship and donations are still coming in. Other fundraising effort means there will also be an additional £1,000 to donate, bringing the total raised so far for Surrey Air Ambulance to £2566.42.

As in previous years there has been lots of socials - the highlights being our New Year's Eve Trip to the Isle of Wight, the Epsom Rotary Great Gatsby Charity Ball and of course Anthony & Ellie's Annual Eurovision Party. And of course there has been the regular pub quizzes, drinks, birthday meals and karaoke plus a few new events, namely Afternoon Tea & a World Cup Bring a Dish Night both kindly hosted by Helena.

The club has also been involved in community events over the past year. In September members of the club helped out at the Epsom and Ewell Borough Family Fun Day at Hook Road Arena. In December we were doing Christmas Collections with Epsom Rotary and in March we returned to Slindon for our annual conservation weekend with the National Trust. And in May we helped out at Cheam Village Fair. We have also been helping out with conservation projects at Epsom Riding for the Disabled and St Ebba's Hospital Garden during the year and this Sunday we will be helping out with the Race for Life Event at Epsom Downs.

We have also supported various Rotary and Rotaract events over the year. We have been slightly quizzed out in 2013/14 attending charity quizzes organised by Langley and Iver Rotaract, Bromley Rotaract, Ewell Rotary and the supporters of the Royal British Legions. We also attended Camberley Rotaract's Gameshow Mashup and supported Woking Rotaract's Charity FIFA World Cup Sweepstake. We've enjoyed being able to support so many Rotary and Rotaract charity events, meet new members of the Rotary family and even if we didn't win any of the quizzes we certainly got lots of great raffle prizes.
A big thanks to everyone who was on the committee this year and good luck to the committee of 2014/15. And thanks to Epsom Rotary for their support this year. Its been great to do some joint socials. We look forward to more joint events in the future.

Here's to a great 2014/15 for Epsom Rotaract!
