Skittles Evening in Newdigate, hosted by Ewell Rotary 29/01/2011

The Six Bells pub in Newdigate was the setting for a truly unique social event. A wooden Skittles ally was specifically erected in the back room of the pub for this momentous occasion.

On this evening, Skittles, a traditional mainstay of pub games in days gone by, came to life in spectacular and raucous fashion. On the night, members of Ewell Rotary, Epsom Rotary and Epsom Rotaract were divided up into four separate teams. There were several rounds to this game, with a meal in between.

The object of skittles is to knock down nine wooden skittles with 3 rubber balls. The players have three attempts (one ball per throw) to knock them all down. A point is awarded for every skittle knocked over. The team with most points wins. In the end, Team One (captained by Ewell Rotary's Andrew Heard) was victorious and garnered the cash prize with 178 points. Ewell Rotary's John Davis garnered the title of best bowler with the highest individual points tally.

A winner stays on contest was staged next. Every person in this event was involved (and paid £1 each to play). Each person had to knock down at least one of three skittles with the ball. If you missed it, you had to sit down. After everyone had a go, it was reduced to only one skittle.

Once the smoke had cleared, only two men were left standing. They were Mike and Keith from Ewell Rotary. Mike missed, so it was down to Keith to secure victory. Keith, in an attempt to garner laughs, bent over and threw the ball between his legs - and toppled the skittle to a huge ovation, winning the prize money!

In conclusion, it was a night of ups and downs, of laughter and suspense. Skittles will truly never be the same again! Thank you to Ewell Rotary for staging an eventful evening.
