On the morning of 15th March 9 of us set off bound for Slindon on the South Downs for what would turn out to be an action packed weekend full of rain showers and sunshine. Welcome to Britain! Despite the rain our spirits were not dampened (excuse the pun).
This was all in aid of work for the National Trust and
organised by Wendy. Due to the numbers in attendance, accommodation was
provided free of charge which left us more time to enjoy each other’s company
and, most importantly, the excitement ahead.
The next 2 days would see us putting up fencing around a
door mouse conservation area. In all I think we probably put up about 30m of
fencing which was no easy feat considering the post holes needed to be dug by
hand. On face value this may sound like a really boring activity but, as is the
way with the enthusiasm of Epsom Rotaract and its members, I don’t think that
there was a single quiet moment or low point.
It was such a great opportunity to meet new people and do
something that is so rewarding, important to the countryside and sums up what
Epsom Rotaract is all about. The feeling at the end of the weekend and looking
at what has been achieved can’t be beaten.
Thanks go to Wendy for organising the event and the meals,
National Trust for providing all the tools that we needed and a daily fire to
boil the 'Billy' for hot drinks (I have never felt more at home in the middle
of a woodland) and all those to attended for making it such a great weekend.
